Invisalign and Clear Aligners Therapy Q & A

Iris Erdell, DDS, MS Orthodontist

What is clear aligner therapy?

Clear aligner therapy is a different orthodontic system that uses a series of custom aligner trays to straighten your teeth over time. Clear aligners fix mild to moderate spacing problems, and can also help correct small gaps, crowded teeth, protruding teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

Made from clear, BPA-free plastic, clear aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can take them out when you need to eat or brush your teeth, and they’re nearly imperceptible when you’re wearing them.

Dr. Erdell has been working with Invisalign and 3M Clarity Aligners for over 15 years and offers complimentary consultations. She will do a thorough evaluation of your bite, teeth, gums, and bone to determine if you are a good candidate for either treatment or if traditional or clear braces would be a better fit.

How do clear aligners work?

Similar to traditional wire-and-bracket braces, the goal of clear aligners is to change the position of your teeth by applying precise, controlled force. Dr. Erdell’s detailed treatment plan specifies which teeth should be moved at each stage for safe tooth movement and desirable results.

Following her instruction, Invisalign or 3M will then manufacture a series of custom aligners designed to fit closely against your teeth using 3D computer imaging.  During the period that you wear each aligner, it incrementally moves specific teeth until you are ready for the next one in the series. The process continues as you advance from one aligner to the next until you finish with the final aligner and complete the procedure.

Total treatment time varies between six to 24 months, with office visits every six to 10 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

Aesthetic appeal

Because they are virtually invisible, clear aligners will not bring unwanted attention. This makes them an attractive alternative to traditional braces, particularly for older teens and adults. Some tooth colored buttons called attachments will be needed for the aligners to work effectively but they blend in very naturally.

You can take clear aligners out when you need to, which is indispensable just before that important job interview or when you’re heading out on a first date.

Better hygiene

Because you can remove them before eating or when you need to brush and floss, clear aligners are more hygienic than braces that are fixed to your teeth.

Clear aligners are designed to fit closely and comfortably — their smooth contours won’t scrape or cut the inside of your mouth.
